What is Cord Blood Banking?

10/02/2018

You’re just about to give birth to your baby, and all around you, you hear about this now unfamiliar, but soon to be familiar term – Cord Blood Banking. Now, what does that actually mean?

Collected at birth, and stored cryogenically for future medical use, cord blood typically contains potentially lifesaving cells, called stem cells. Should the need arise when your child or family need stem cell therapy or transplant in the future, these banked stem cells can be called upon. Basically, cord blood banking is likened to an “insurance” taken up for the future of your loved one.

At Cryoviva, their believe is that every child deserves the gift of protection. The moment your baby steps into the big unknown world we live in, is also when he needs protection the most.

How is this made possible?

Well, the blood from the placental side of umbilical cord is rich in Haematopoietic Stem cells (HSCs). Stem cells possess the unique ability to transform into specialised cells and are able to perpetually create more copies of themselves.

The HSCs found in Cord blood have a higher potential for regeneration than our adult bone marrow stem cells. This is precisely the reason why collection at birth is critical to ensure the optimal result is achieved. These specialized cells can be used to help treat various diseases related to the blood and immune system.

Cord blood is currently used in stem cell transplant to treat malignant and non-malignant condition in children and adults, such as different types of Leukemia, Lymphoma and Anemia.

The collection process is painless and safe for both you and your baby. It does not interfere in any way with your labour and delivery. In fact, often the whole process is so quick and painless, many do not even know that the procedure has taken place.

As much as we like to avoid thinking of the worst that could happen to our loved ones, it is very probable. And the first step you can take to be ready for this battle is to find out more about cord blood banking here: https://cryoviva.com.sg.
